Meet David Gignilliat: Your Advocate For Ranson

My path to this race—and to the city of Ranson—has been shaped by a commitment to public service, rigorous inquiry, and a deep appreciation for the legacy of service and innovation that defines my family.

I was raised with a profound respect for the duty we owe our community. My father, the late Henry Culver Gignilliat, Jr., a Northwestern University graduate and a dedicated professional with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, taught me the value of infrastructure, careful planning, and the quiet, persistent work required to build a better future. My mother, Nancy Johnson Gignilliat, was a woman of character and steadfast dedication who instilled in me the resilience and integrity that guide my life today.

My heritage is deeply rooted in a legacy of military, executive, and aviation leadership. The Gignilliat name is synonymous with institutional excellence, perhaps most notably through the leadership of General Leigh Robinson Gignilliat. As the long-serving Superintendent of the Culver Military Academy (1910–1939), General Gignilliat’s influence extended far beyond the campus. He was a foundational figure in the development of the national ROTC program, a veteran who led troops in World War I, and a humanitarian who oversaw massive food distribution efforts in war-torn Europe. His commitment to building "neat" and principled character in young men remains a cornerstone of the Gignilliat family ethos. This spirit of service—refined through our historic ties to institutions like Culver Military Academy and St. John’s Military Academy—was further bolstered by early aviation pioneers in our family.

Among these pioneers was Lieutenant T.H. Gignilliat, whose early work at the American Aeronautic Machine Company in the late 19th century helped spark the American imagination regarding human flight. Years before the historic achievement at Kitty Hawk, Lieutenant Gignilliat was actively developing aeronautic technology, laying the intellectual groundwork for what would eventually become the era of powered flight. Carrying this spirit of innovation into my own career is a core pillar of my identity.

As a graduate of the University of Virginia, I was instilled with the belief that a well-functioning society requires active, informed, and transparent engagement with the systems that govern us. I am proud to have served my fellow alumni by founding the UVA Alumni Club of the West Virginia Eastern Panhandle, a role that reinforced my dedication to building strong, connected communities.

I bring a diverse professional background to this campaign, defined by a commitment to results and ethical stewardship. As an entrepreneur and owner of Quixotica Creative, LLC, based in Harpers Ferry, I understand the challenges and rewards of running a small business. My decade of experience in financial services and investment management has equipped me with the analytical rigor to handle municipal budgets and advocate for fiscal responsibility.

Beyond my work in the private sector, I am a storyteller. My writing career, which includes contributions to The Washington Post and publications across West Virginia, has taught me how to look beneath the surface of a community. I have learned that a representative’s true job isn't to talk, but to listen—and to translate the needs and aspirations of their neighbors into concrete, actionable policy.

I am running for City Council at-large because I believe Ranson is at a pivotal turning point. We need leadership that respects our rich history while embracing the administrative clarity required to manage modern growth. I am ready to bring my research, my work ethic, and my dedication to civic integrity to the Ranson City Council.
